How to install loft ladders

October 30, 2009
Posted in Ladders — Written by Bill

Loft ladders are designed to provide access to a loft which is directly underneath the roof. Loft ladders are preferable because they take up less space, when compared to other kinds of ladders. It all depends on the design, as loft ladders can be installed with a slope which makes it easy to climb.

Generally, loft ladders come in two types; aluminium or wood. You can install any one of them according to your preference as they are attached and fitted in the same way.

Some of the loft ladders are installed permanently and there are also some movable loft ladders like sliding ladders which are mostly used in libraries and freestanding ladders which are placed or leaned against the edge of the loft.

The installation process

Firstly, set up the ladder, so that you can easily attach the brackets. You have to put the ladders underneath the loft and then climb up to the level of the attachment point. After this, mark the exact point of attachment with a pencil where the brackets will be attached to the joists of the loft. You need to measure the top of the joists from the roof where you want to attach the ladders.

After doing all the markings, with a drill gun and self-threading screws attach the first bracket to the joist and do the same with the next bracket. Now, attach the ladder to the brackets. Use supplied pins to attach the end of the loft ladder to the brackets. You can adjust the width of the ladder stand with a wing nut which is attached onto the brackets.

Lastly, you need to test your ladder several times and make sure that all the hinges are working properly and it is safe to use.

Different types of ladders are required for completing different types of tasks. Ladders come in many different heights and styles, so it is important to choose a ladder that precisely meets your requirements. When choosing a ladder, you should ensure that you purchase one that is of an appropriate length and allows you to carry out your task productively and safely.

Telescopic ladders are suitable for all types of tasks, as they can be adjusted to different heights, and they are easy to carry and store. The telescopic ladder also comes in many different styles which enables you to find the best one suit your requirements.

There are different types of telescopic ladders available, including telescopic steps ladders (or telesteps), telescopic loft ladders and telescopic combination ladders. Telescopic loft ladders provide trouble-free access to loft areas of businesses or homes. They can be easily installed in the area over the loft’s hatch and can be adjusted to different heights. The ladder is completely housed within the frame when the hatch is closed, thus taking up less space.

Telescopic ladders are fantastic for a range of purposes, but you should ensure that you use the correct one for your needs, in order to prevent any accidents.

A loft ladder is a must have accessory to access your loft

A loft is one of the most important storage areas in a home. You can use various devices in order to access it but loft ladders are the most preferred way of accessing a loft. Loft ladders are one of the most widely used accessories in a home.

Loft ladders – what they can do for you

A loft ladder is a more viable option compared to a permanent fixture like stairs. Stairs occupy more space, while loft ladders are compact in nature. Such ladders are extremely efficient and really useful as well. The base of the ladder provides a firm support to the user and they are a much better way to get access to your loft than standing on a chair.

Types of Loft Ladder – which one will you choose?

Loft ladders are available in many different styles and designs. Aluminum ladders and timber ladders are some of the different types of loft ladders. The electric loft ladder is a newer model that is used by consumers who like ease of use and efficiency. Loft ladders can also be installed easily and most loft ladders are provided with handrails and rubber feet for safety purposes.

Other Considerations – what else do I need to know?

You should select fold away loft ladders if you haven’t got much space available in your home. Such ladders can be folded into the loft when not in use and then pulled down when you need to gain access.

Features and types of loft ladders

Loft ladders are made from different materials.

Here are some of the materials and designs used;

Aluminium loft ladders –
Aluminium loft ladders are lighter in weight than other types of ladders and they have a greater level of strength to face the day-to-day wear and tear. There is no need to cover aluminium ladders, as they are not affected by weather or sunlight.

Fibreglass loft ladders –
Fibreglass loft ladders can be used for electrical applications because they do not conduct electricity, unless of course they get wet. Fibreglass loft ladders are heavier than aluminium ladders and they are prone to cracks under heavy loads in comparison to aluminium ladders.

Timber ladders – Timber loft ladders are made from softwood or hardwood. These ladders are very strong and they do not conduct electricity. Unlike aluminium and fibreglass ladders, timber ladders need a varnish finish which helps to preserve the life of the ladder.

Most loft ladders need clearance in the loft so they can fit in when you close the hatch. Thus, you need to make sure your loft opening is the right size for the size specified for each ladder.

Purchasing a Loft Ladder After a Conversion

Due to lack of space, many homes choose to convert their lofts into an additional room- most commonly a bedroom. After transforming your loft into an additional room, you need to consider buying a loft ladder.

Many people construct steps that lead to the loft conversion. However, using a loft ladder as opposed to steps is a much more versatile option.

Why choose a loft ladder over steps?

• The whole point of converting the loft into an additional room is
to make maximum use of the space available in the house. Using
steps will only take up more valuable space in your home.
• There are many types of loft ladders available today. You can
choose a ladder to match the existing décor of your home.
• Wooden ladders are strong and sturdy and can hold a
substantial amount of weight.
• Steps are permanent whereas ladders can be used as and when
required.

Loft ladders are essentially foldable steps, which can be opened when required and neatly folded away when they are not needed.

The Benefits of Scaffold Towers

Scaffold towers have been popular for many years and are ideal for a variety of purposes. However, they are most commonly used for constructing and repairing buildings. Scaffold towers can be attached to the building where the work is being performed and are particularly useful for when a person wants to reach a height which they would otherwise not be able to reach.
Scaffold towers are temporary platforms that are used to support people, materials and tools and allow people to work on an elevated area safely.
Most people choose to use scaffold towers instead of ladders to perform building repairs and constructions. This is because ladders tend to be shaky and have to be moved around whereas scaffold towers are extremely strong and sturdy
Scaffold towers are often used during the construction of tall buildings, and allow contractors to perform work on a safe and stable platform.
Not only can they be used for constructions, but scaffold towers can be used to carry out simple work around the home such as fixing ceilings or lofts.

Step Ladders: Easy to store and fold, and safer to use than traditional ladders as the steps are broader.

Telescopic Ladders: Comfortable and portable to use as they collapse on themselves. Telescopic ladders are versatile and can be extended to any height. They are handy for work in and around the house.

Fixed Ladder: These ladders are permanently fixed to buildings and are usually equipped with landings, cages or rest platforms.

Extension Ladder: Usually equipped with more than two extensions, they allow you to work at more than one height.

Step Platform Ladder: These ladders have a platform on the top on which to place tools and other equipment.

These are different types of ladders with different advantages and you should shop around to find one that best suits your needs. Buying a ladder that is not appropriate for its intended purpose could lead to accidents.

Why scaffold towers are becoming popular

In homes, offices or in any other location, you might have to work at a great height. You might find it difficult to access high ceilings at homes, or storage places in offices or might require working at heights if you are in a construction business.

In such situations, scaffold towers are effective as they allow you to work in places that you might be unable to reach normally. People use scaffold towers as they are strong, sturdy and safe. These platforms are not only capable of handling your body weight but can immensely take the weight of heavy devices too.
The scaffold towers are made of different materials like steel, aluminium and fibreglass and consist of different characteristics.

• Steel scaffold towers: The steel scaffold tower has been popular for many years. They are immensely strong and durable. They are best suited for the heavy works industry. Moreover, they are very affordable. These steel scaffold towers are used extensively for construction work and site maintenance.
• Aluminium scaffolds towers: These towers are lighter compared to the steel towers and thus can be easily moved from place to place. These types of towers are durable and rust free and thus they are used during window cleaning and plastering.
• Fibreglass scaffold tower: If you are looking for a scaffold tower that is both functional and safe then choosing the fibreglass tower is the best option. The fibreglass tower is used when work has to be done associated with electricity. This is because the scaffold tower is not a conductor of electricity and it thus prevents electrocution. This tower is cost effective and provides complete security while working on it.
Depending on what your requirement is, you can choose from the three types mentioned above to make your work easy and convenient.

What is Scaffolding and the types of Scaffold Towers?

October 2, 2009

The temporary framework used in the construction or repair of buildings is called scaffolding. It supports the construction workers and materials used on a building site.

It is a modular system of metal pipes termed as ‘tubes’. The purpose of scaffolding is to provide a safe place for work with easy access to the materials.

Scaffolding consists of the following parts:

1) Tubes: These are metal pipes which could be steel or aluminium. Aluminium is preferred as it is light, flexible and more durable.
2) Couplers: These are like nuts or ‘bolts’ used to connect and join tubes.
3) Boards: Made from wood or light weight metal, boards provide a platform to support workers and raw materials.

Scaffolding can be of two types:
Independent Scaffolding: These are mobile scaffold towers with wheels attached and can be moved from one place to another. The wheels attached can be rotated for ease of movement.
Attached Scaffolding: These are immobile scaffold towers attached to buildings with ties.

There are different types of scaffold towers available. These include:

Aluminium Scaffold Towers: With a maximum load capacity of around 150kgs, these scaffold towers are extremely versatile and simple to use as well. The tubes are made from aluminium and hence they do not rust. Being very user-friendly, these are simple and quick to erect too. The boards are strong and sturdy and the end height of the tower can be adjusted too.

Quick Erect Folding Trade Aluminium Scaffold Towers: As the name suggests, these scaffold towers are quick to erect, use and dismantle. The maximum load these towers take is 200kgs. Being light and extremely mobile, the towers are strong and safe.

Loyal Aluminium Industrial/Trade Scaffold Towers: These are very strong and sturdy and can take a maximum load of 950kgs. With dual locking wheels, these towers are suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use.

All the above scaffold towers are made British Standard (BS) 5973 standards.
