Ladders: safety tips to avoid mishaps and injuries

August 14, 2009
Posted in Ladders — Written by Brian

Ladders have many uses. They have made the work of an average builder or DIY enthusiasts very easy. The different types available can suit all your needs at home and in the workplace. However, if not used safely, ladders can cause fatal accidents. Most of the time, accidents take place due to the improper knowledge on how to use ladders. Losing one’s balance, slippery ladders or a ladder stationed incorrectly are the main causes. It is of prime importance to think about your safety while using ladders.

Taking suitable care when using ladders can avoid accidents. Below are some tips to avoid hurting yourself and others.

• Use the right type of ladder while working; a wood or a fibreglass ladder is perfect for electrical purposes. Also, check for safety while climbing and avoid wet feet.
• Test the weight ability and see to it that the steps of the ladder are dry. Check for loose parts and always have a person with you to help you.
• Position the ladder on a solid surface. Never place a ladder on a window pane and do not climb it is not balanced properly.
• Avoid carrying tools with you while climbing the ladder as you may lose your balance.
• Do not use a folded up ladder as the ladder may slip.
• Two people should never climb the ladder together at the same time.
• Never stand on the top rung of the step ladder and avoid leaning from the ladder as risks may increase.

Everybody has a right to be safe, so see to it that you incorporate appropriate safety tips to avoid severe mishaps.
