Tips before you purchase a loft ladder

June 21, 2009

If you want to use the loft in your home for storage or living purposes, then you will require a loft ladder to make it more convenient for going up and down. Loft ladders are easy to install and can be installed by yourself or with the help of a professional.

Loft ladders are designed to fit between the existing framing of the ceiling and the floor of the loft. Generally, it is required that the existing access holes to the loft be enlarged a bit when installing loft ladders. If you do not have enough space to enlarge the access hole and are planning to cut and frame a new access hole opening, ensure that the bottom of the loft ladder is resting in a safe spot leaving enough room for maneuvering.

In most homes, the loft roof and floor are framed with either lumber or trusses. The truss roof has an interlocking system and its components should not be cut, while lumber framing can be easily reorganised to suit your needs. If your roof is made of trusses and you find that it is in the way of your preferred ladder location, it is best to seek professional advice before commencing the work.

Loft ladders are mostly made of steel, aluminum or wood and are available in many stylish designs.
