Do you know who invented the Ladder?

A ladder is something we all pretty much take for granted nowadays with one in almost every garage. How often does it cross your mind where the invention came from? They started out as wobbly structures made of grass!

Ladders are ancient tools and technology. A ladder is depicted in a Mesolithic rock painting that is at least 10,000 years old, depicted in the Spider Caves in Valencia, Spain.[3]references the rock painting which shows two naked humans carrying baskets or bags that are employing a long wobbly ladder, which appears to be made out of some kind of grass, to reach a wild honeybee nest to harvest honey. Modern ladders are believed to have been conceived by Hebrews and Egyptians.

I wonder if they had invented the veil at that point?  It would take a braver person than I to climb a wobbly grass ladder without protection against bee stings to retrieve honey from wild bees!

A ladder to me forms part of the human wish to explore – not just far away lands – but things previously out of our reach!  Once an essential way to obtain raw materials or food for survival, a ladder is now a household essential – why do so many of us own a ladder?

The main reason is to carry out DIY around our home – a famous old fashioned saying ‘an Englishmans home is his castle’ in which as the occupier of a house, there forms a desire to keep it looking clean, neat and cared for. The hardest areas to reach are the ones that everyone else sees when they pass by your house – the roof for example, gutters, fasia boards, upstairs windows, repointing work etc etc.  A loose or cracked tile can cause leakages into your home, a relatively easy job to fix, but an essential piece of equipment used to access your roof would be a ladder or scaffold tower. The seasonal clearing of leaves and other debris from gutters also prevents nasty leaks into your home as well as the cleaning of fasia boards keeps your home looking tidy and approchable – first impressions do count, particularly when looking at selling your home.  The cleaning of upstairs windows is also very difficult if not impossible without a ladder!

So whether you are a tradesperson of prefer to do it yourself, we have a ladder for every purpose – our multi purpose ladder is suitable for all the general tasks required around the home – and ideal for window cleaners, builders, gutter and fasia maintenance, handymen and of course the homeowner!  We currently have a Bonfire Bonanza sale where multi purpose ladders are being offered at an unbeatable price http://www.laddersandscaffoldtowers.co.uk/

Why no home should be without our platform step ladder

With the recent inclement weather we have been seeing in recent weeks across the UK, you might be thinking that you have no need for a ladder right now. However, having a step ladder to hand in your home can prove to be useful in more ways than one.

Protecting your safety

Those who are unfortunate enough to experience the stress of their home being flooded will be aware of the need to make their home safe from the dangers of gas, electricity and other utilities. Often electrical consumer units are situated out of reach meaning that assistance is needed in order to reach the consumer unit in order to switch it off. Clearly standing on a chair or other surface is not recommended and this is where having a set of step ladders are worth their weight in gold.

Built to withstand harsh conditions

We know that conditions are not always ideal when using ladders and with water being a particular problem currently, our step ladders feature extra deep, ribbed treads, rubber feet and a high level safety rail for your peace of mind when standing on the platform.

The anodised aluminium construction means that the ladder will not rust after coming into contact with the water and the smooth surface will make wiping down afterwards very quick and easy – no sharp edges or finishes that could cause injury.

The ladder can be smoothly and quietly deployed so as not to disturb other members of the household. The ladder can be easily opened out ready for quick action.

The step ladder folds up completely flat making storage in a cupboard or even transportation completely effortless, we recommend this ladder is kept within easy distance of your consumer unit or any other utility meter that requires reaching in order to access it.

Flood safe

With features designed to work in floods our step ladders include the following upgrades completely free of charge:

  •  Unique handy tool tray
  • High level safety handrail

The step ladders is certified to EN131 standard meaning the ladder is suitable for both trade and DIY uses so you can use in confidence that the ladder is built to last and is suitable for a workplace too.

Do you need to upgrade your loft hatch?

Many householders don’t think twice about their loft hatch and how much heat is lost through the gaps of a poorly fitted door or even straight through the door itself.

Before you add more insulation

Before you consider adding to your insulation in your loft, think about your loft door. Has it ever been replaced? Many homes have a loft hatch that has heat wasting gaps around the edges or is nothing more than a thin piece of wood.

If you still feel chilly in your home, it is worth investing in a replacement loft hatch door. They are very low cost and modern loft hatch have mineral fibre insulation designed to keep heat out of the loft and in the rooms below. The cost of lost heat leaking through your existing loft hatch door will cover the cost of purchasing an up to date loft hatch door in a short period of time.

Fit with the minimum of fuss

No specialist skills and costly labour is needed to fit our loft doors – they fit with the minimum of fuss and create a simple, non-fussy design on the outside which will compliment any decoration scheme. The loft hatch door comes complete with the fixings you need and full instructions written in clear English.

Protect yourself from fire too

We’re particularly proud of our 1 hour fire rated swing down loft hatch door which can buy valuable time in the event of a fire. Many fires begin in loft spaces and due to the location of lofts fires burn unnoticed for some time before fire is discovered. The loft hatch door is manufactured using power coated steel and has been tested and certified by Chiltern International Fire Ltd to withstand fire for up to 1 hour. The fire rated hatch is a must where safety is paramount.

Meet the latest building regulations

The 1 hour fire rated loft door is suitable for installation in even the newest of buildings. It meets the latest building regulations including insulation and condensation guidelines:

  •  100mm thick insulation lining and provides the required U value outlined in the Robust Construct details in Part L of the building regulations
  • There is a draught seal to prevent the problem of warm moist air entering the loft
  • The loft doors meet the requirements of the BS 9250:2007, BS EN 13141-1:2004 & BS 5250: 2002, which cover air tightness of ceilings in pitched and horizontal roofs, air leakage rate through the loft hatch and frame and control of condensation in buildings.
  • The Loft Doors have also been tested and meet the requirements of the Building Regulations 2000, Conservations of Fuel and Power in New Dwellings part L1A 2006 as well as the reasonable limit for the design air permeability of 10m³/(h.m²) at 50pa.
  • The insulation used in all our loft doors has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 5.

No need to buy a new loft ladder

Keep your costs down – there is no need to buy a new loft ladder when you purchase this fire rated loft hatch. It is compatible with any loft ladder thanks to the drop down hinge design of the door. The door can also be removed completely to allow for easier loading and unloading of the loft. It is also safer for other members of your household who may accidentally bump their head on a lowered loft hatch door.

Easy to fit and maintain

Our fire rated loft hatch door is a far more cost effective option to a traditional joiner made timber loft access hatch. Furthermore, no painting is required once the loft hatch is fitted. The textured surface is easy to clean in a classic design that will not become dated.

This loft hatch is designed to fit between 38mm thick trussed rafters or ceiling joists spaced at 600mm centres which provide a clear joist opening width of 562mm. You will need to make an opening of 562mm wide x 726mm long to accommodate this hatch.

A perfect access solution to your loft space

If you are looking for a simple and straightforward way of gaining access to your loft where safety is not compromised, then we highly recommend our fired rated hatch door. Our no quibble lifetime guarantee is included as standard along with free next day delivery.
